Erdogan Jails Political Opponent, Faces Immense Push Back, Detains Journalists

Written by Daniel Mercado

On March 19th, popular opposition leader and Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoÄŸlu, was detained for “alleged corruption and terror links.” At the same time, 100 other people, including district mayors and İmamoÄŸlu’s wife, were also detained. Ekrem İmamoÄŸlu belongs to the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (Translated in English as the Republican People’s Party), a Kemalist, pseudo-Social Democratic, left-of-center party. The CHP recently won a historic victory in last year’s elections, winning 14 provinces and 35% of the vote. This recent crackdown just so happens to be days away from the CHP scheduled primary elections.
