Green New Deal passes with Unanimous Support at KU

Written by Sasha

The KU Student Senate unanimously passed a Resolution for a Green New Deal for the University of Kansas on Wednesday October 23rd. The resolution was championed by Sunrise Movement KU, the youth environmental movement on campus. It passed without any discussion as the last item on the agenda at the end of a several hour long Students Assembly meeting. The meeting also included a presentation on rate increases from Housing and Dining services that resulted in a candid admission that the dorms on campus have mold growth.

The resolution is focused on Environmental Justice, advocating for more than just sustainability. It also makes demands for student employee wage increases, recognizes solidarity with the faculty union and graduate teaching assistants union, and demands options for healthy plant based food options on campus.

Two years in the making, this action is part of a broader movement at universities nation wide. Earlier this year the University of Florida Student Senate also unanimously passed a Green New Deal becoming the first in the nation. On the other side of the country, coalitions within the University of California network are also working on similar initiatives.

As statements of intent, resolutions passed by the KU Student Senate lack binding authorization, but they do represent a commitment which Sunrise plan's to leverage towards creating lasting change on campus.

Bunkers are for the Bourgeoisie

Too many from the proletariat class have died unnecessarily in service of the bourgeois bunker or whittled their lives away constructing tunnels in the pursuit of surplus value. Bunker-busters make no such ideological demand for construction or labor. With precision and tact, they explode.

LETTER: To the K-State Administration

Facing budget cuts, K-State is funneling money from research and teaching back to administration.

Awareness is not Enough to Address Sexual Assault

I appreciate the event in isolation as a recognition of the trauma I and many others have experienced. However, in the context of rape culture and how SA is weaponized or ignored for political gain, simple awareness is nowhere near enough.

Why I’m a Hoxhist - and why you should be too.

The Marxist-leninists have it wrong. Their so-called “soviet councils” and “centralized economies” are highly vulnerable to outside assaults - pragmatism can’t save you from opportunism - only the five foot thick wall of concrete that is ideological purity can. When you open your mind to new ideals, it becomes dangerously weak. The more you spread your ideology thin through the integration of disparate thought processes, the more it becomes nearly impossible to achieve your vision. You can’t praxis if you’re trying to praxis a thousand different little things. But if your mind was set on one, beautiful, Albanian man…

Playing Games with Students’ Lives

Attrocious on both ends, KU has a minimum wage of $10.25/hr, but K-State is still stuck at $7.50/hr. This is not livable.
