Gallant Fired; Protests Ensue in Israel

Written by Daniel Mercado | Edited by Claire Blair

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant is fired and to be replaced with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz. [1]

According to an Axios Report, Gallant had opposed the draft exemption of Hasidic Jewish Students of the Yishuv. [2] The reason as to why this would be dangerous for the Netanyahu Coalition is that the Shas party is the party of Hasidic Jews, is the third largest party in the Knesset [3], with the Hasidic community being the fastest growing Jewish Colonialist ethnic group in Israel. [4]

Netanyahu Claimed that “Significant gaps emerged between me and Gallant in the management of the war, and these gaps were accompanied by statements and actions that contradicted government and Cabinet decisions." [5]

In response to the firing of Gallant, there’s been a mass movement of protesters in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem - the protest in Tel Aviv blocking the Ayalon Highway and causing immense disruptions. [6]
